Wen DeVear - Sassy & Silky Smooth
Sweet Jazz, Sassy Blues, Silky Smooth R&B and soul erupting Gospel from an all-in-one vocal stylist. A smorgasbord of fun!
Wen DeVear hails from the historical Chestertown, Maryland located on the Upper Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. She started singing Gospel with her family at a very early age. As a teenager her taste for music changed when she joined a rock band called the “Organized Confusions.” She later joined several R&B groups and became the vocalist with the late Jazz Johnson Trio. She has shared the stage with such greats as Guy Davis, Bobby “BlackHat” Walters, Marlon Saunders, Keeta Bates and others.
Her performances have gained notoriety across the Mid-Atlantic region at universities, theaters, Jazz clubs, Café’s, Dinner theaters, etc. She played the 11th Annual GPU Berks Jazz Fest for three years with a group called “Ladies Sing the Blues.” She has performed in concerts presenting a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, touring the local theatres in the Tri-State area of Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, with other musicians.
After relocating to Williamsburg, Virginia, Wen became a member of VCS (Virginia Chorale Society) singing Broadway show tunes, as well as having her own Jazz and Blues Band, sharing their unique flavor around the Peninsula, Tidewater and Hampton Roads area.
Wen DeVear is a natural talent, possessing the ability to captivate audiences in a medley of genres. Does she have a preference? “No, not so much of genres, but to moods”, she says.
“There are seasons for blues”, she quotes, and then she feels better in gospel. Later she would chase down sulky jazz, and when really satisfied in all of that, she will dabble in folk. Her choice of music depends greatly upon what’s happening to her and around her. But most assuredly, whatever she sings has got to touch her soul.
Wen crackles with electric energy. Alive!
